Does My Dog Need to be Brushed?

Brushing and grooming your dog often means good hygiene and health for them. Brushing can keep dirt, pollen, and other nasty things off your dog. By brushing them, you are also increasing blood circulation which creates a shiny, healthy coat on your dog. You might be wondering, though, how often to brush your dog and what brush is right for your dog.

How Often?

How often your brush your dog will depend on the length and texture of their hair. If your dog has shorter hair, it might need to be brushed once every few weeks as they don’t have that much loose hair. Longer-haired dogs, on the other hand, should be brushed every week to get rid of unwanted hair and to prevent tangles.

What Brush?

A good brush overall to use is a slick brush as it is suitable for most dogs. For a shorter-haired dog, a soft bristle brush works well as it does not dig as deep into the fur and skin. When your dog has curly or fluffy hair, a pin or wire brush has deeper coverage. A wide-toothed comb works well for dogs with longer hair as it detangles and removes undercoat. If you are worried about an undercoat on your shorter-haired dog, a thin-toothed comb might be better suited.

Although grooming can be beneficial, please be careful as it should be an enjoyable process for your dog. If you use a conditioner to help detangle, use the right brush, and groom frequently, it should be an easy process for you and your dog.
