Tips for Traveling with Dogs in Montana

It can be a challenge to travel with your dog, especially if he is a large breed. Thankfully, the wide-open spaces, miles of hiking trails and sparkling waters of Western Montana make for a great place for a pet-friendly vacation.

It’s important to note that pets are not allowed on some public lands and waterways, and in other area they must be leashed. Dogs can also be considered predators and prey to some wildlife, so it’s very important to follow all the rules for a safe adventure. Always remember to clean up after your pet too!

State Parks: Pets are allowed on leash in most of Montana’s State Parks.

Glacier National Park: Pets are allowed in developed areas, campgrounds and picnic areas, along roads, in parking areas and in boats on lakes. Pets are not allowed on trails, along lake shores, in the backcountry or in any building.

Dog Parks / Runs: Some of Western Montana’s larger cities have off-leash dog parks. Make sure to follow posted signage at each park.

Patio Pups: There are dozens of restaurants, bars and breweries that allow dogs on their outdoor patios.
