Thank you for your interest in Sit Means Sit dog training! We specialize in off-leash obedience, especially around distractions, which means many different things for every dog and its family. Read below for answers to our most frequently asked questions!

WHAT IS YOUR METHOD FOR TRAINING?

Sit Means Sit is an attention-based training program that uses a balanced approach to training. We utilize a variety of training tools depending on the unique circumstances presented by our clients and their dogs, including leashes, collars, food, toys, and most notably, our Sit Means Sit remote training collar to achieve the goal of focus around distractions.

Remote collar training has come a long way in the past few decades. We firmly believe in humane dog training and only employ technology that is safe for dogs and humans. The technology our training collar utilizes is similar to a TENS unit found at a chiropractor or physical therapist’s office. The collar operates on the lowest level of stimulation required to maintain focus, almost like a tap on the shoulder. It has a broad range of modes, is easily adjustable, and can cover up to a quarter-mile range.

Once you have the ability to maintain focus and communicate expectations with your dog, training can be applied in many ways, including general obedience, correcting problem behaviors, and managing serious behavior issues such as anxiety, aggression, and reactivity.

HOW MUCH DOES YOUR TRAINING COST?

Programs include individualized instruction through immersive day training or private lessons, along with follow-up group classes designed to build reliable obedience and real-world results. Many clients find the value comes not only from improved behavior, but also from reduced stress, better communication, and more freedom with their dog.

Training costs vary based on your dog’s behavior, temperament, and your training goals. Our programs currently range from $899–$2,999 depending on the level of support needed. All training programs require a Sit Means Sit training collar or a compatible unit if you already own one.

The best way to determine the right fit is through a free consultation, where one of our trainers can evaluate your dog and recommend the program best suited for your needs.

IS MY DOG TOO OLD FOR TRAINING?

No dog is too old to learn new tricks! Whether it comes to a reliable off leash recall or getting control of excess barking, we can customize any of our training programs to suit your dog and your family. Sit Means Sit has worked with dogs from puppyhood well into their teens!

DO YOU WORK WITH SMALL DOGS?

Absolutely! Sit Means Sit works with all breeds and all sizes. Some small dogs tend to get away with behaviors that larger breeds would not and may have obedience goals overlooked due to their size. A behavior exhibited by a small dog may get a pass when the same behavior would require immediate correction for a larger dog. Over time, these behaviors can add up to create an unruly dog and a frustrated owner.

Our customized approach to training dogs of all sizes and temperaments allows us to fine-tune our training system to suit even the smallest dogs. Check out Wolfgang’s transformation, see Demi find the best place to travel with her mom, or watch Gambit show the big dogs how it’s done!

DO YOU WORK WITH AGGRESSIVE DOGS?

Yes! The same customized training foundation that allows us to get results for obedience around severe distractions can also be applied to managing aggressive and reactive behaviors by building communication, structure, and impulse control.

Owning an aggressive dog means it is critical to work with a trainer who is experienced with aggressive behavior. Our trainers have experience working with all breeds and many forms of aggression, including aggression toward people, dogs, and other animals, as well as food or resource guarding.

Some people worry that remote training collars can increase fear or aggression in dogs. In reality, the outcome depends heavily on the training approach, the dog’s temperament, and the experience of the trainer using the tool. When used properly, remote collar training becomes a clear and consistent form of communication that can help many dogs feel more accountable, focused, and confident in distracting situations. You can see this type of training in action with this dog’s initial intro to our company founder.

DO YOU WORK WITH ANXIOUS OR FEARFUL DOGS?

We do! Many dogs are anxious or fearful, and their behavior may manifest as submissive behavior, fear-based aggression, or general avoidance. Training must be addressed in a consistent and structured manner that builds confidence through obedience exercises, repetition, and exposure.

The Sit Means Sit method works for anxious or fearful dogs by building trust through communication and utilizing that foundation to help focus their energy instead of reacting to the things in their environment that may cause anxiety or fear.

At Sit Means Sit, we pair remote collar training with structure, repetition, and positive reinforcement to build communication — not fear or intimidation. Every dog is different, which is why we customize our training approach to the dog in front of us and prioritize humane, fair, and safe training methods.

WILL THE DOG LISTEN TO THE WHOLE FAMILY, INCLUDING KIDS?

Absolutely! Training goals are best met when the entire family involved in the dog’s daily routine participates in the training process to provide consistency and reinforce the foundation built through the Sit Means Sit method. We encourage family members who are actively involved with the dog to attend training sessions and group classes so everyone understands how to communicate clearly and consistently.

Many families find that training not only improves obedience, but also creates a calmer household, more structure, and more confidence when handling their dog in everyday situations.
