Creating a Room for Your Dog
While our dogs generally seem to take ownership of the entire home as their own territory, it can be beneficial both for their health and your own sanity for them to have some space of their own in your home. We know space can be hard to come by in smaller apartments and condos, but even if it’s just a bed or a corner of the living room, we recommend creating a space for your dog to consider theirs and theirs alone. It will help them feel safer and more at home, especially when you inevitably have to leave them home alone. Here are our tips for creating a room for your dog:
Choose the Space Wisely
A lot of thought should go into what space you designate as your dog’s. Keep in mind that your dog will likely take ownership of whatever space you give them, so try to give them a space that you won’t want to occupy too often. Laundry rooms, spare bedrooms, and walk-in closets with any extra space are great spots to place a crate, blankets, or toys for your dog to have their own space. Think your dog needs clear boundaries? Try this freestanding pet gate to keep your doggo contained and ensure they know what areas are theirs and what are off-limits.
Safety Precautions
After choosing your dog’s space for them to call their own, the next step is to make it safe for them to roam around and play. If your dog is older, simply clean up the area and make sure it is free of any debris, slippery spots, or allergens that could endanger or irritate your dog. If you have a younger pup, you’ll have to take more steps to completely puppy-proof the area in question. Tape down electrical cords or hide them behind furniture. Move trash cans out of your pup’s reach or replace them with a touch-free version that your pup won’t be able to get into. Put away shoes, clothes, and small items that might be choking hazards for your little one.
Comfort is Key
The next step to creating your dog’s perfect space to grow, learn, and play is to make sure it’s plenty comfortable for them. If they have a favorite blanket or stuffed animal, place those in their special spot. Add pillows or a doggie bed if it’s your furry friend’s style. Of course, if your dog’s designated space is within the living room, they’ll be plenty comfortable on the couch. Tailor it to your dog’s unique wants and needs!
Mental Exercise
Last, but certainly not least, your dog will need some mental exercise while they’re hanging out in their new territory. Place some mentally-stimulating toys throughout their space. For starters, you can leave them with a Kong toy filled with peanut butter or their favorite treats. They’ll have to work on digging out the peanut butter or treats, which will keep them entertained for hours. This Seek-A-Treat puzzle toy is another great option to keep your dog motivated and mentally active. Whatever your dog prefers, be sure to keep their brain working while they’re in their special space.
Creating a room or space for your dog is exciting and can be a great bonding experience for you and your dog. Get creative and remember, you don’t have to have all the space in the world for your dog’s space to be special!
