Shelters Where You Can Adopt Senior Dogs

Not everyone has the time (or energy) to train a new puppy, so why not adopt a senior dog? Senior dogs are constantly overlooked for puppies; most people tend to think puppies are easier to train, but they are not! Seniors usually already have basic training and social manners; however, most aren’t adopted because they’re old. All pet parents who’ve adopted a senior dog agree they are the sweetest dogs and the best decision they’ve ever made! If you want to adopt a new dog, check out these senior dog rescues first; you’ll find your best friend!

Izzy’s Place Senior Dog Rescue

Located in northern Colorado, Izzy’s Place is a non-profit, no-kill organization focused on rescuing and re-homing senior dogs. Their mission is to ensure no old dog feels unloved or afraid; each rescued dog is placed in a loving foster home until matched with a new owner! All rescues are evaluated by their Veterinarian team and assessed for what home environment the dog needs to thrive. If you’re not ready to adopt, you can volunteer as a foster home or donate to support the senior dogs!

The Old Mutt Hut

Next, The Old Mutt Hut is a remarkable non-profit rescue dog center that provides security for dogs over the age of 10. The dogs are provided a full-time caregiver and open living space; therefore, they are never kenneled or crated. The Mutt Hut is about 30 minutes outside Colorado Springs, so they have plenty of outside access and playtime! They keep their website up-to-date with their sheltered dogs if you’re looking to adopt, or they have a donation option if you want to help support them.

Pepper’s Senior Dog Sanctuary

Centered in Denver, Pepper’s Senior Dog Sanctuary provides loving, lifelong homes to elderly dogs who’ve been abandoned or abused. The sanctuary is Vet supervised and provides on-site hospice needs, with a huge outdoor area to play and explore. Dogs have individual bedrooms, dedicated physical therapy, and a kiddie pool to cool off! They are opening their new, upgraded facilities this year, where they’ll be able to house more dogs than ever!
