Tips for Moving With Your Dog
One of the most stressful events is moving. As a dog, when you see everything in different places and boxes everywhere, one may get very curious.
Moving into a new home may make your dog anxious. Once anxious, your pet may become upset and agitated. This will only make you upset and stress out more while moving. However, there are some tricks that can make this move easier for everyone
Get Them Used To It
Dogs love routine and habit, so when something disrupts that they notice. Introduce them slowly to different elements of moving before actually moving. Introduce the moving boxes first, that way they will get used to the sight and smell. Also taping the boxes will help them understand the sound and not get rattled in the future.
Avoid Disrupting Routine
When moving, schedules change a lot and running around happens more often. However, to keep your dog from thinking there is a lot of change try to keep their schedule the same. This includes walking and play times. Keeping them more comfortable and safe will keep them happy.
Relax
Your dog picks up on your emotional cues. Keep yourself clam and relaxed, it will give them a better sense of security.
Pack Their Things Last
One thing that will aggravate your puppy the most is taking away all of their stuff early. Leaving their stuff out until the very last minute is best. But any rarely used toys can be thrown in a box or thrown away discreetly.
Bring Them to the New Neighborhood
Although you may not be able to take your pooch into the new house, you can take them for a walk in the new neighborhood a few times. This will get them acclimated to the new environment and comfortable with new surroundings. Check out a nearby dog park or dog friendly brewery.
Field Trip Day
The official moving day will be stressful. To keep your dog away from all of the movement and excitement, take them on a field trip to a familiar place. Maybe this is the best day for a grooming appointment, or to spend time with other family members or friends. This can be a great day away for them.
The key is making sure your dog is comfortable leading up to the move. Eliminating factors early that may make your dog aggravated, can make moving stress-free for you and your dog.
