Why Dogs Love Socks
You and your dog spend time together everyday participating in a wide range of activities.
They show love in the most interesting ways, and they love to get their hands on anything that gives them a pleasurable experience. At the end of the day when you take off your socks, your dog tends to grab them because they have your scent on them no matter the amount of sweat that is also there.
Curiosity
You think your dirty sock is smelly and should be kept in the dirty laundry at all times, unless it is clean or you’re wearing it. Your dog thinks your sock is the best thing in the world for a few reasons. When your dog is a puppy, they chew your sock for the purpose of teething. But when they get older, they chew your sock because they love it. The taste and scent of your salty skin in the sock is great to them. They love the texture and the chewiness of the sock.
Part of the reason that dogs chew on socks is because they are bored and don’t know what the sock is. They sometimes get bored of their toys and choose your sock because it’s familiar but still different and new in some regards. If you don’t want your dog chewing on your sock, make sure not to encourage them grabbing your socks. However, your sock can be a security blanket for your dog and sometimes make them feel safer.
Mental Health
All dog owners want their pets to be safe and feel loved and supported. Socks can help with emotional issues, such as being alone or feeling unsafe. They can even help with restlessness and calming your dog. This is a reason to encourage your dog to chew on your sock. However if you want to truly discourage chewing on your sock, make sure to keep them out of reach for your dog. You can find toys that are similar to socks for your dog.
Alternatives
Dogs have great senses. Humans use our hands to explore while dogs use their noses and mouths to explore. Socks will contain a strong scent that is appealing to them, which is why they may be drawn to the sock over the chew toy you buy them. Try to find a toy with a strong scent that your dog likes to keep them away from your socks.
We all love our dogs, and we do what we can to ensure their happiness and safety at all times, even if that sometimes means giving them your smelly socks.
