Denver Dog Obedience Training Client Testimonial

This is a recent testimonial that came to Sit Means Sit Denver from a client named Pete along with his dog, Keala. As you’ll read, Keala was exhibiting some significant aggression when Pete came to us and now with his continued effort and taking advantage of our lifetime group classes, they are both enjoying their time together much more!

Pete writes:
“Though I have never put much faith in testimonials and am skeptical of darn near everything. But this is my experience with Sit Means Sit and I HIGHLY recommend their training program:

I adopted Keala, a 3 ½ yr. old pure-bred Aussie in September 2008 from a local shelter in Boulder, CO. Her behavioral profile was vague and didn’t state any immediate problems but when I introduced her to 2 other friendly dogs, she viciously attacked them. I took her for walks but she led the way and pulled hard on the leash. She also jumped the fence and wouldn’t come back to me when I called her. I’ve had dogs all my life and attempted to use my “training techniques” but she’s alpha and wasn’t listening to me.

I was frustrated but refused to take her back to the shelter. I looked into several training programs including the ones at shelters, Petsmart, local trainers at the Vet’s office, etc. But I was intrigued by a friend’s recommendation for Sit Means Sit because they offered training for the life-time of the dog. I scheduled a demo but was on guard and skeptical – mainly because of my ignorance of the “shock collar”.

When I pulled into the parking lot, Keala saw the other dogs in a class and started barking, baring her teeth, and attempting to jump out the window. The entire class looked at me but the dogs showed little interest in her antics. Sit Means Sit Trainer, Anthony, had 2 of his dogs with him and demonstrated OFF LEASH what his training program was capable of. I was super-skeptical of the collar until I held it in my hand and had Anthony put the juice on. It wasn’t the police-style-lethal-taser I thought it was but rather an adjustable electrical pulse that didn’t hurt but rather got the dog’s attention. I wasn’t completely convinced until he put the remote collar on Keala and within minutes had her walking around off leash calm, submissive, attentive and non-aggressive…all with other dogs around!

Showing me what we could do with MY dog is what sold me. We immediately signed up and after 3 individual sessions, Kaela and I now weekly attend group classes with other dogs and handlers. At first, we started with a muzzle to protect the other dogs from her. But now, she’s muzzle free (as long as I have the collar on her and pay attention to her physical signals) and she’s really starting to socialize with other dogs. The results were quick – within weeks I was walking and running her off leash and she simply ignored other dogs barking at her.

I wish I had a “before/after video” because you wouldn’t believe that she’s the same dog. I take her everywhere with me and most of the time have her OFF LEASH on running and hiking trails. When another runner/cyclist/hiker/dog passes us, I send her off the trail to patiently lie down while these people and animals pass. People are amazed at “how well trained she is”. But it’s really training me to communicate with her. The collar is just a tool to get her attention and then hear & understand my command.

Both Anthony and John are extraordinary trainers and their guidance and instruction have been instrumental in bonding Keala and I. I can communicate with my furry companion and she knows what’s expected of her and longs for my affection. I gotta also say that there is nothing aggressive, harmful or abusive about this training program. That’s important to me because the last thing I want to do is yell or physical hurt my dog as a way to “train” her. If you are skeptical (like I was) check out the free demo and even ask me in one of the group classes!”
