These Household Items are Toxic to Dogs

Trying to keep your dog happy and healthy can feel daunting when it seems like so many products are full of things that can be harmful to our furry friends. Here is a list of some of the most common toxic household items so you can pet-proof your home.

Medicines and Pharmaceuticals

Prescription and non-prescription medicines can all be toxic to dogs and should be always kept out of reach. Common medicines like Advil and Tylenol can have some pretty adverse effects even in small doses.

Also, recreational drugs like Marijuana are also toxic to dogs and should always be monitored closely.

Cleaners and Detergents

Most surface cleaners used to wipe counters or clean floors are not going to cause major issues for your pup when already applied and dried on a surface. However, cleaners in their original form, toilet cleaners, hand sanitizers, and bleach are all very toxic to pets and should be safely stored where they cannot be accessed.

Many People Foods

While there are many foods out there that dogs can safely enjoy, there are also many foods that can cause some pretty serious health issues for your pet. It is best to always avoid:

  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Grapes
  • Raisins
  • Avocados
  • Chocolate
  • Coffee
  • Gum
  • Baked goods

Batteries

Dogs may think that batteries look like an appetizing snack, however, the contents of the battery can be very harmful when ingested, causing ulcers, when they come in contact with the esophagus and stomach.

Rodent Poisons

This one may seem obvious, but the bait meant for catching and killing mice and rats can have severe, adverse side effects in dogs and should be avoided at all costs. Do not keep these poisons in a place where your dog could access them.
