Pumpkin Spice Treats for Canines

When the leaves start changing and the air cools down, you know fall has arrived. It’s the season of pumpkins, trick or treating, and best of all, pumpkin spice everything! But don’t let your pooch miss out on the fun. Here is a pumpkin spice treat you can make at home so Fido can get in the fall spirit.

What You’ll Need

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup canned pumpkin (This is different than pumpkin pie filling. The only ingredient should be pumpkin.)
  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flower
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 tablespoons peanut butter (Be sure your peanut butter doesn’t have artificial sweeteners like xylitol in it.)
  • 3/4 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Equipment:

  • Measuring Cups
  • Mixing bowl
  • Measuring spoons
  • Rubber spatula
  • Baking sheet
  • Non-stick mat or parchment paper

Optional

  • Paw print molds (If you choose not to use a mold, you can just roll your dough into a small ball and squish them flat)
  • A stand mixer (You can mix by hand but this makes it much easier!)

How to Make the Treats

Step 1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees

Step 2. Add all of your ingredients to a mixing bowl

Step 3. Mix together all of your ingredients until they are combined. The texture should be similar to that of playdough so that you can easily shape and mold it.

Step 4. Using your hands, press the dough into the molds. If you don’t have molds, roll the dough into balls and smash it into little patties. Another alternative is to roll the dough out with a rolling pin and then use cookie cutters to cut them out into shapes.

Step 5. Place your molded cookies onto a parchment-lined cookie sheet. They won’t expand in the oven so you don’t need to worry about spacing them out on your cookie sheet.

Step 6. Throw your cookie sheets into the oven at 350 for 40-45 minutes until they are nice and crunchy.

Step 7. Let the treats cool and then let your pup try them out!
