Dog First Aid Kit

Do I Need a Dog First Aid Kit?

Emergencies can happen at anytime, and you should always be prepared. A first aid kit for your dog can make a huge difference in a dire situation. You can purchase a kit and add to it, or make one from scratch it. The recommended items to include are:

  • Scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Tick remover tool
  • Ear wash
  • QuikClot, for stopping bleeding
  • Medical tape
  • Gauze
  • Vet wrap
  • Antiseptic wash or wipes
  • Antibiotic ointment
  • NSAIDs (ask your vet)
  • Thermometer
  • Lubricating jelly
  • Ice/hot packs
  • Towels, washcloths, and blankets
  • Benadryl
  • Emergency phone numbers
  • Copies of important medical records

Other things to consider are if your pet is diabetic or takes regular medication. You can also ask your vet for recommendations based on your specific pet’s needs.

While it is important to have a first aid kit for your pet, it’s equally important to know what is in there and how to use it. Check around for first aid classes with your veterinarian, community college, and the Red Cross.
