First-Year Milestones You Can Celebrate with Fido
Raising a dog can be just like raising a child, and just like with children you’re probably tempted to celebrate every milestone ever. If you’re new to dog ownership then it can be complicated figuring out what milestones are worthy of a party and which aren’t. Here are some first-year milestones you shouldn’t be scared to celebrate with Fido.
“Gotcha” Day
If you adopted your buddy then this is the first date you should make note of. Gotcha Day can be celebrated every year on the anniversary of their adoption or can be celebrated as a one-off occasion. If you’re celebrating a puppy, then start off by letting them explore their new home. Let them play around and give them as much love as you’re comfortable with. Similarly, older dogs should be allowed to explore their surroundings with a designated spot to relax when they’re done.
The First Birthday!
This one is definitely worth a party. Celebrating a dog birthday is just like celebrating a human birthday. Bake them a cake, set up some streamers, and invite any friends or family they might have made over the year. If you adopted your dog and don’t know their birthday, then you can substitute it with their Gotcha Day. Let your dog know you love them, and get yourself ready for the doggy teen years.
Successful House Training
Potty training your dog is just as important as potty training your kids, and it can be just as hard, too! For puppies, it should take about three months for them to get used to going outside on a regular schedule. If you adopted an older dog then the likelihood of them being house trained is high. Nevertheless, you should remember to take them out regularly, too. That way they can avoid any accidents.
Losing their Baby Teeth
We’re sorry to say that collecting your puppy’s baby teeth probably won’t happen. They’re much smaller than human teeth and normally get swallowed during sleep. However, you can still celebrate a mouth of grown-up teeth by gifting your puppy a new toothbrush! Brushing your dog’s teeth is important and can prevent a laundry list of different dental diseases. The earlier you start brushing, the sooner it gets easier!
First/Last Day of School
This shouldn’t come as a surprise! First day of puppy training is just as important as any other event. It marks the beginning of a new, more socialized era for your dog. You can celebrate it by setting up some balloons and doggy treats for them yo enjoy when they get home. Don’t be scared to invite Grandma and Grandpa to join in on the fun.
