Are Frozen Treats Safe for Dogs?
Often in drive-thrus people are offered “pup cones” or some sort of sweet treat for their dog. They are often not bad, but dogs are intolerant to dairy products. There are several reasons to avoid feeding your dog ice cream, frozen yogurt, and popsicles while other frozen treats are out there that can be safely enjoyed by your dog.
Frozen Dog-Friendly Treats to Enjoy
There are some frozen dog treats that you can make at home that your pup is sure to enjoy.
- Frozen green beans, banana chunks, strawberries, blueberries, or peach chunks are a great quick and easy treat. When purchasing frozen items from the store make sure to read the labels and ensure there is no added Xylitol.
- Combine ripe banana, pumpkin or sweet potato, and plain yogurt or coconut milk together. Freeze in a mold or ice cube tray.
- Use a blender or food processor to puree watermelon, cantaloupe or honeydew. Fill silicone mold and freeze
- Use the pureed fruit from above and make an “ice cream” by adding frozen yogurt or coconut milk and freezing.
- Fill your dog’s favorite chew toy with a recipe above and freeze.
Reason to Avoid Ice Cream and Frozen Treats
Dairy is at the top of the food intolerance list for dogs. For some, eating dairy can result in vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. If you choose to let your dog try it, offer them a small amount and wait to see how they react. Keep in mind that your dog should only have plain vanilla or fruit flavors as chocolate and nuts are toxic to them. Another hazard is xylitol. It is an artificial sweetener that is HIGHLY toxic and potentially deadly. Make sure to ask if there are any artificial sweeteners before offering to your dog. Popsicle sticks can get lodged in your dog’s mouth and potentially cause splinters or intestinal damage.
Don’t forget to be careful when giving your dog dairy, but be sure to give them a nice treat to combat that summer heat!
