Winter Care for Your Dog’s Paws
Winter weather can be brutal on your pups poor paws. Left exposed to the cold weather and toxic chemicals your dog’s paw pads can dry, crack, experience trauma, frostbite, and even chemical burns. To ensure your hound makes it through the holiday season unscathed, we’ve got some tips to keep them happy and healthy all season long.
Prepare their paws in advance
There are several different balms out there that are specifically designed to protect your dog’s paws. But it’s essential to make sure your dog’s paws are also in good health before applying any product to them. Proper paw grooming, such as clipping nails and trimming hair, is necessary to ensure the highest protection possible for your dog. Cutting any hair between their toes that could come in contact with the ground will prevent ice balls from forming that would cause extreme discomfort to your pup. Long nails force your canine’s paws to spread out which would allow an increase of ice and snow to accumulate between their paws.
Once you’ve ensured your pup’s paws are adequately prepped, apply a thin layer of balm before going out on a wintertime walk. Once home, wipe any excess balm off with a warm washcloth and then use a new clean layer to sooth if any, discomfort and irritation.
Doggy Booties
Another option you can try is investing in some boots made specifically for Fidos feet. Most of them consist of sock-like material with a velcro strap to keep them from falling off. You can even find some booties with soles attached to provide more traction and stability. When using dog boots make sure you don’t tighten the strap too tight, it should be snug, so the shoes don’t slip off but not too tight to restrict motion or circulation.
Many dogs take time to adjust to wearing boots on their paws, so you’ll need to prepare for a brief adjustment period. Start with allowing them to wear them around the house for short periods of time, while slowly increasing how long you leave them on. During this time praise them, so they understand that wearing them is a positive thing you’re proud of.
Watch out for salt and de-icers
Know that salt and most de-icers can be toxic to your furry friend. Try to avoid areas that have been heavily treated with these harmful chemicals. For your own personal sidewalks and walkways, you can find pet-friendly de-icers that you could also encourage your neighbors to use as well. After going on a walk carefully wash your pup’s paws in case, any substances become stuck to them. This will prevent your canine friend from licking it off and dangerously ingesting it, with that being said while on your walks don’t allow your dog to lick up any snow or puddles that could be contaminated.
Know the signs of frostbite and hypothermia, and try only be outside for short periods of time especially as the weather continues to get worse. The winter weather isn’t just brutal on you but Fido as well, so it’s important to stay informed and keep your pup safe this season.
