Winter can be hard on dogs and humans alike! While we know how to handle winter for ourselves, sometimes we neglect to note what makes winter easier on our dogs. At Sit Means Sit in Madison, our dog trainers know how to to keep your dog happy all winter long. That is why we are taking a few blogs to share some expert winter tips!

In our last blog, we went over parts of dog training that are crucial to winter safety, including paw inspection, commands, and leash training. In this blog, we will review some of the things that can endanger your dog’s health – the reasons why good training is so important!

  1. De-icers
    • The ice-melting chemicals and salt that people put down can be irritating to your dog’s paws. Wash your dog’s paws off after each walk, and if he has long fur or short legs, give his stomach attention, too.
  2. Antifreeze
    • Car antifreeze is deadly, but its sweet taste is very appealing to dogs. It doesn’t take much – as little as one or two teaspoons can be lethal to a small animal. Keep an eye out for spills and consider switching to a safer product.
