Winter Training Tips

Well, we’re fully into winter now, and Wisconsin winters are nothing to sneeze at. Winter can be challenging for dogs and their owners, because it brings a set of challenges that range from annoying to dangerous. In our next few blogs, our dog trainers are going to give you some great tips for getting your dog friend though winter.

Basic Dog Training Tips for Winter

  • You will need to inspect and wipe your dog’s feet after outings, so getting him comfortable with having his paws handled is important.
    • Keep towels by the back door and look out for ice packed between your dog’s toes.
    • Reward your dog when he lets you examine his paws.
  • Your dog should know commands like “leave it” and “come”.
    • You want to be able to protect him from poisonous winter substances like antifreeze as well as unsafe bodies of water and other dangers.
    • If your dog has trouble with these commands, contact us today.
  • Loose leash training will protect you both on slick walks.
    • You do not want to fall onto your dog or be yanked off your feet when your dog gets excited and jumps ahead just as you’re stepping on a patch of ice.
