Winter Myths Part 2

We are still in the thick of winter, and keeping yourself and your dog healthy can be a challenge! That is why we are taking some time to dispel some major myths about dogs during winter. Being able to steer around these misconceptions will give you and your dog the ability to make this the best winter ever!

In our last blog, we explored myths about dog booties and small dogs playing winter sports. Today, we have two more myths to bust for you!

MYTH: Dogs with thick fur are fine living outside

  • Truth: It doesn’t matter how thick your dog’s coat is: no dog is safe from frostbite and hypothermia. We understand that your dog may not be able to get enough of the snow, but always make sure he or she has the option to come inside at any time. If your dog loves being out in the snow, make sure it has unfrozen water.

MYTH: Because it isn’t hot, it’s okay to leave my dog in the car.

  • Truth: Just as cars can get too hot, they can get too cold, too. Even if you know you are going to be only a few minutes, you may meet someone you know or experience complications. The risk of your dog suffering in your car is not worth it. Leaving the engine running is not a good option, either. It opens up the possibility for carbon monoxide poisoning. Either leave your dog at home or take him or her with you.
