Canine Separation Anxiety: What Can Be Done?

Does your dog have a lot of trouble when you leave it alone? We have been exploring separation anxiety in dogs – you can read about it in our first and second blogs on the topic. As Madison’s premier dog training school, we have a lot of experience with canine separation anxiety. When we do consultations at our clients’ homes, we see many signs of this issue.

The best thing you can do for your furry friend is make an appointment with Sit Means Sit. We are experts in dog obedience, and we have years of experience to offer you and your dog. After your dog gets expert training from us, here are some things you can do to ensure that he is more at peace when you have to be gone for a while.

  1. Leave a treat-release toy for your dog to focus on. You can also place small treats around the house if you’re comfortable doing so.
  2. Give your dog lots of exercise, especially if it is young. Add in a lot of TLC and playtime, and you will have a calmer dog in general.
  3. Do not try to soothe it before you leave – when you do so, you are rewarding anxious behavior and therefore reinforcing it as a good thing.
  4. Leave the TV on or put on some soothing music to keep the house from being completely silent.

Sit Means Sit is proud to be Wisconsin’s premier dog obedience school. We use kind, time-proven techniques to understand your dog and move it forward so that you two can have the best friendship. Contact us today to learn more and get a free consultation.
