The State Dog of Massachusetts

The State Dog of Massachusetts

You probably know every state has its own flag, bird, flower, and even motto associated with it – you may not know what they are, though you probably know they exist. But, were you aware that states have their own dogs? Well in 1979, Massachusetts was added to the list of 12 other states that have appointed a specific breed to represent them. Their official decision was the *drum roll* … Boston Terrier! And you can probably guess why.

The History of the Boston Terrier

The Boston Terrier dates back to the late 19th century when inbreeding between the English Bulldog and a Terrier began. In fact, a US Representative from Massachusetts Edward Burnett had his bulldog bred with a French Terrier, hence officially creating the famous Boston Terrier.

Unlike their past ancestors, Bost Terriers are smaller and significantly less aggressive. After their introduction to the world, their popularity quickly skyrocketed. So much so that in 1889 the American Bull Terrier Club was founded – later though, it was changed to the Boston Terrier Club. Another fun fact about Massachuset’s state dog is that it was the first US breed to be officially recognized by the American Kennel Club.

Their Appearance & Behavior

Boston Terriers have noticeably large, wideset eyes and short tails (similarly to a few of their ancestors). The color of their coats was once insignificant but now is considered to be an integral part of their appearance, according to breeders. Typical colors include white with a combination of either black, brindle, seal, or a mix of them all.

Considered to be extremely friendly and gentle dogs, Boston Terriers are also protective of their loving owners and live to please them – making them pretty easy to train. But on the flip side, since they are protective over their pup parents, they can be slightly aggressive towards strangers and other unfamiliar animals. Overall though, Boston Terriers are great family dogs that are excellent with children, the elderly, and other house pets.
