DIY Dog Cones for More Comfort

We have all had to put our furry friends in the cone of shame at one time or another. Though we hate to see them upset, the cone is very important.

Why Cones Are Important

The purpose of cones is to protect your pup while they are recovering. The cone prevents your companion from licking or biting sores, hot spots, or stitches as they heal. Additionally, this is important in the healing process as licking or biting wounds will slow healing and could lead to an infection.

The Downfalls of Traditional Cones

While traditional cones are effective, they are not perfect. They can be heavy and uncomfortable for your four-legged friend. For instance, they can make walking or even lifting their heads difficult. Luckily, there are more comfortable, do-it-yourself options!

DIY Cones

Stockings or Tights

For this easy project, you will need stockings, tights, or pantyhose (that are wide enough to fit over your pup’s head comfortably), and a pair of scissors. Cut the tights at least 6 inches from the top to create a tube that can be slipped over your pup’s head. Fold and scrunch the tights so that it is comfortable but still effective! Remember, you can always cut more off but you can’t add it back on! So, start with a generous length to then adjust to your pup as needed.

Pool Noodle

First, measure the circumference of your four-legged friend’s neck then cut a piece of twine that is the length of that measurement plus an extra three or four inches. Then, use a serrated knife and cut the noodle into about 3-inch sections (again, depending on the size of your pup). Lastly, add the noodle pieces to the twine and tie them around fido’s neck. Alternatively, you can use your dog’s collar instead of the twine and simply fasten it around their neck like normal.

Towel

A towel is a great material to create a DIY cone for pups of all sizes. First, pick a towel that’s length suits your dog’s size. Then, fold the towel into thirds lengthwise. Wrap comfortably around your companion’s neck and secure it with duct tape. You may want the help of a friend with some peanut butter to help make the fitting process smoother!

The next time your companion needs to wear a cone, consider one of these more comfortable, do-it-yourself options!
