Countries Where There Are No Breed Bans

If you and your furry friend are flying to another country, you should be aware of any breed bans in place.

What Are Breed Bans?

Breed-specific legislation (BSL) is a list of dog breeds and guidelines. This varies by location but includes which dogs are prohibited and which are subject to specific conditions. Prohibited dogs are not allowed under any condition and are in the “banned” category. However, dog breeds that are allowed under certain conditions are in the “restricted” category.

Reasons for Banned Breeds

There are many reasons why some countries and areas ban specific breeds. For example, breeds that have a history of biting or the most damaging bites may be banned. Additionally, breeds that tend to be aggressive or attack people may also be on banned lists. Also, mutts or crossbreeds that are believed to have unpredictable behavior are often banned. So, mixing with a banned breed will also make the mixed dog illegal. Additionally, countries with extreme weather ban dogs that will not do well in the climate.

Countries With No Breed Bans

Below are a few countries that do not have any banned breeds.

Finland

Finland is overall a pet-friendly country! It has no restriction on breeding or the importation of any breed. However, there are some regulations. For example, dogs in public places must be on a leash and your pet passport must include an import permit and proof of rabies vaccination. But, wolf-dog hybrids are not allowed in the country.

India

India has no restrictions on the importation or breeding of any dog breeds. However, dogs bred with wild wolves are not allowed as pets. Additionally, there are no restrictions on taking dogs in public. But, major public areas may not allow dogs on the premises due to the high concentration of people.

Italy

Italy does not have any ban on breed entering or being kept in the country. However, there are local BSL in Venice. For example, Dobermans and Rottweilers are not allowed in the city.

Ireland

While there are no bans on specific breeds, there are restrictions on breeds in Ireland. These dogs include the American pit bull terrier, English Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Bull Mastiff, Dobermann, Rottweiler, and German Shepherd among a few others. You must have a lease and sometimes a muzzle to take these dog breeds in public.

Mexico

Mexico is another country with no banned breeds. However, dogs imported from other countries must have their rabies vaccination.
