San Gabriel Dog-Friendly Hiking Trails

Dog-Friendly Hiking Trails Near San Gabriel

If you live in San Gabriel, especially if you own a dog, you’re probably well aware that there aren’t any trail within the city’s limits. However, we found some pretty fantastic (and relatively close) trails you and Fido are free to check out. No matter your skill level – first-time hiker or wildlife professional -we’ve found the trails for you!

Lacy Park Loop

Difficulty Level: Easy

1485 Virginia Rd
San Marino, CA 91108

If you head over to Lacy Park, there’s no doubt you’ll probably run into a handful of other furry friends due to its high popularity in San Marino. Lacy Park Loop is only a 1.3-mile walk set on a smooth paved-over trail. On weekends there also happens to be a $4 entrance fee if you don’t live in the San Marino area. So head over on a weekday if you’re a non-resident of the city and don’t want to pay the fee. Other than that, if you’re looking to socialize with your canine companion, then Lacy Park Loop may be the perfect spot for you.

Wild Mustard Loop

Difficulty Level: Easy

4235 Monterey Rd
Los Angeles, CA 90032

If you’re looking for a bit less traffic on an easy trail, maybe consider taking your pup to Wild Mustard Loop. It’s by no means an isolated trail, but you’ll get far less traffic than Lacy Park Loop. During you and Fido’s 2.3-mile stroll, you’ll pass beautiful wildflowers and a gorgeous lake at the very top.

Eaton Canyon Trail

Difficulty Level: Moderate

1750 N Altadena Dr
Pasadena, CA 91107

Eaton Canyon Trail’s difficulty level increases a bit to a moderate level. While tackling this trail, you and your pooch will be greeted by a fast-flowing 40-foot waterfall on top of views of the San Gabriel and Santa Monica Mountains. On the weekends, there tends to be heavy foot traffic on this trail, but the views it offers are worth it. During the 3.5 mile hike, you and your furry friend will also encounter subtle streams, boulders to hop on, and rock walls to climb if that’s an activity you have experience in.

Echo Mountain via Sam Merrill Trail

Difficulty Level: Moderate

3302 Lake Ave
Altadena, CA 91001

Another heavily trafficked and moderately difficult trail is the Echo Mountain via Sam Merrill Trail. If you’re a runner and like to take your pup with you, this trail is definitely recommended. But do keep in mind it can get crowded on weekends and nice days. This 5.4-mile trail doesn’t have too much shade along the route, so be sure to bring sunscreen for you and maybe even Fido.

Bailey Canyon Trail to Jones Peak

Difficulty Level: Hard

451 W Carter Ave
Sierra Madre, CA 91024

If you and your pooch are looking for a challenge, you should head to Bailey Canyon Trail to Jones Peak. This 6-mile trail is located near the Sierra Madre and is mostly shady if you get there early in the morning. You and your canine companion can also look forward to the beautiful waterfall featured along the way.

Going on nature walks with your dog is a great way to break the same old boring neighborhood route you’re used to. Fido will love the change of pace as well. Just be sure to bring plenty of water and doggy bags!
