How to Stop Your Dog From Jumping on People

Puppy Training Denver: Stop Jumping 101
To begin training your puppy to stop jumping, it’s best to employ the help a friend or family member, preferably a person your dog often gets excited to see. Put your pup on a leash and have them sit. Once sitting in place, have your helper begin to approach. When your pup stands up, have the other person immediately turn around and retreat. Ask your dog to again sit, once in place have the other person approach again. Continue to complete this exercise until your pup stays seated and allows your helper to approach without getting up or jumping.
The purpose of this exercise is to instill the idea that sitting in place is rewarded with the attention of a visitor. When they get up or jump, the visitor will instead leave. It’s very important to keep in mind that this is not a one-time lesson. Practice with different people in different environments. Ask friends get involved and help you with the process. When you are planning to have a visitor, put your puppy on a leash and be prepared to practice upon their arrival. By continuously enforcing this behavior, you will help your pup kick the bad habit of jumping.
