Spring Activities to Enjoy with Your Dog
As the weather warms, Colorado is alive with many opportunities for outdoor fun. Though we’re known the world-over for our winter sports, there are endless options for outdoor fun in Colorado in the summer as well. This is especially true for doggie moms and dads. While dogs typically enjoy frolicking in the snow, our extreme cold winter temperatures are not exactly ideal for dog recreation. However our summers are ideal for dog friendly outdoor activities. As you begin to fill your calendar with plans, don’t miss out on these fun opportunities to enjoy the beautiful weather with your furry companions.
Camping
Camping is a favorite pastime for most Coloradans. Spending time communing with nature is the perfect opportunity to bond with your pup. Before setting out on your next camping adventure, be sure to select a dog-friendly environment. If your dog isn’t much of a swimmer, it might be best to plan to camp a safe distance from water. If your dog has a tendency to wonder off, plan to keep them on a leash or keep a close eye on them when off leash. It’s also important to remember that certain snakes, mountain lions and other animals can be a potential threat to your dog’s safety. There is no need to be afraid to take your pup camping, just be cautious and remain alert to potential danger.
Hiking
Hiking is the ideal warm weather activity to enjoy with your dog. Getting in some brisk exercise is great for both of you. Just like camping, it’s important to consider your pup’s safety when setting out for a hike. When entering a public recreation area, be sure to pay attention to posted rules, guidelines and warnings. Most parks will require your dog to be on a leash. This is for their safety as well as the safety of others. Be sure to abide by all posted rules and simply enjoy the park! If you are visiting a dog park, it’s especially important to be cautious. Check out our tips for safety while hiking with your dog.
Swim
If your dog loves to swim, get them out to a lake or pool as soon as the water is warm enough. Swimming is great exercise and the perfect way to tire out even the most energetic of puppies. Just like any outdoor activity, it’s important to keep an eye on your dog and consider their safety at all times. If you will be swimming in a lake, be sure to select an area away from boating traffic. If you will be taking a dip in the pool, be sure your pup knows how to safely exist the pool. And when all the fun is over, take precautions to prevent ear infection. Certain breeds are more susceptible to infection than others, talk to your vet and treat your pup’s ears according to their directions.
Play Frisbee or Fetch
Playing Frisbee or fetch is another fun form of exercise as well as a great bonding activity. Even if you don’t have much time or space to roam, a quick game of fetch can tire your pup out and give them the exercise they need!
