Staying Safe on Nighttime Walks

During the winter, you are more likely to take walks after the sun sets. So, along with general safety tips, follow the tips below to keep you and Fido safe during nighttime walks!

Use a Leash

A leash is a safety precaution. Even though Fido is well-behaved, using a leash will ensure your pal won’t get lost or chase after something at night. Looking for a lost dog is no fun, especially in the dark.

Reflective Gear and Lights

There are so many options when it comes to reflective gear. There are vests, collars, harnesses, and leashes that reflect light to make you and your pal easy to see in the dark. Reflectors for you and your pal are a must, even if there are street lights in your area. Bring a flashlight or headlamp too! This will improve visibility for you and your dog and be able to see any hazards in your path.

Plan Your Route

Knowing ahead of time where you are headed will ensure that you always know where you are. Without a plan, you could easily get lost by taking a route you never have before.

Keep Your Phone Charged

In case of an emergency, be sure that your phone is charged! Additionally, have it accessible during your walks. You can also use your phone as a flashlight if you forget yours.

No Distractions

Even though you are bringing your phone, avoid texting, scrolling, or calling on your walk. Accidents can happen while you aren’t paying attention. Keep an eye on where you and your pup are walking, your surroundings, and your pal’s activity and body language. Also, leave your headphones at home. You will want to stay alert to sounds in your surroundings. This could include people, animals, or cars.

Remember, the safety of you and your pup is always a priority. So, follow the tips above during your nighttime walks!
