How to Help Your Dog’s Runny Nose

It’s not uncommon for people to get sick when the seasons change, and as winter rolls around, you may notice yourself or others getting a little sniffly. But did you know that it’s common for dogs to get a drippy nose too?

If you notice your dog has a runny nose, here are some things you can do to help them.

Call the Vet

While a runny nose can just be a runny nose, it can sometimes be a symptom of a larger problem with your pup’s health. That’s why, when you notice a drippy nose, it’s important to call your vet.

A runny nose usually doesn’t indicate anything serious is going on with your pet’s health and in fact, it’s possible your dog has a doggie cold.  However, if the discharge is excessive, discolored, or contains blood, your pet could have something more serious going on.

A runny nose can be indicative of allergies, infections, respiratory diseases, or a multitude of other things. Your vet will be able to pinpoint the problem and get your dog back to feeling better in no time.

Treatments

While most treatments are going to depend on the root cause of your dog’s runny nose, there are still some things you can do to help.

If your dog’s runny nose is caused by allergies, you can ask your vet to conduct allergy tests or an elimination diet to try and figure out what exactly is causing issues for your furry friend. Beyond that, allergy relief medications can be an effective way to manage your dog’s allergies and stop their nose from running.

In the case of infections or other diseases, treatment for your dog’s runny nose is going to involve treating the cause of the problem whether it be through antibiotics or antifungals.

Beyond getting treatment from your vet, the best thing you can do for your dog is make sure they are drinking plenty of water and getting lots of love from you!
