Fun Facts About Your Dogs Nose

Your dog’s nose is very powerful and guides them through in very impressive ways. Dogs have ip to 300 million receptors in their noses versus humans who only have about 6 million.

Below are 5 more fun facts about your dog’s nose and sense of smell that proves that canines are superior.

1. A Dog’s Nose Has Two Functions – Smelling and Breathing

A canine’s nose has the ability to separate air. One portion goes directly towards the sensing area which distinguishes scent, and the other is dedicated to breathing.

2. Dogs Have A Special Organ That Gives Them A “Second” Sense of Smell

A dog’s vomeronasal organ helps them detect pheromones. This organ plays an important role in reproduction and other aspects of canine physiology and behavior.

3. Dogs Can Smell the Passage of Time

Dogs can detect tiny reductions in the concentrations of odor molecules over short periods of time. This allows tracking dogs to quickly determine the direction someone or something has gone by sniffing the ground.

4. Dogs Smell in 3-D

Dogs can smell separately with each nostril. Just as our eyes can see two slightly different views of the world and our brain combines them to form a picture, a dog’s brain does this with their nostrils.

5. Dogs Can Smell Up To 100,000 Times Better Than Humans

A dog’s sense of smell is its most powerful sense. Their noses are so sensitive that dogs can almost detect the equivalent of 1/2 teaspoon of sugar in an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

All dogs are strong sniffers, and although some are better than others, they all have sturdy nostrils.
