Protecting Your Dogs Paws in the Winter

As dog owners, we know the danger that summertime poses to our pup’s paws. But, how can we protect our furry friend’s feet in the winter? Read below to learn how!

Nail Trims

It is always important to keep up with nail trimming. This will keep your companion’s nails healthy and less likely to break, which can bleed and be painful. Additionally, if your pal’s nails are too long it can make it uncomfortable to walk. Long nails can also cause the toes to spread farther apart when walking. This exposes the tender spaces between the toes to snow and ice.

Inspect and Wash Paws

As always, you should regularly inspect your pal’s paws for any injuries or debris. Also, washing your pal’s paws will help remove dirt, debris, and ice buildup. This is especially important in the winter to remove any salt and chemicals your companion may pick up from the streets or sidewalks.

Paw Wax

Paw wax helps protect your four-legged friend’s paws from hot pavement in the summertime. But, it can also be used in the winter to prevent snow and ice from building up on your pal’s paws. Paw wax is specially formulated to be non-toxic. This means that it will not be harmful to your pal if they were to lick the wax off. You can also use vaseline if you are in a pinch but should not be used as an alternative.

Booties

If your pal can tolerate wearing shoes, this is the best option for protecting your companion’s paws. Doggy winter boots can also be lined with fleece for some added warmth. Additionally, you should get a pair that fits properly for the best comfort and results. If your pal is not used to wearing shoes, it can take some time for them to get comfortable with them. But hang in there!

Follow the tips above to ensure a safe and healthy winter season!
