Calm Dog Breeds

Dogs can provide all kinds of support, from emotional to physical. They provide comfort and a sense of home for older owners but can be hard to keep up with in the energy department. Suppose you’re looking for a calm companion for your older relative or prefer a more peaceful furry friend yourself. In that case, this is a list of calm dog breeds.

Xoloitzcuintli

This ancient breed is one of the calmest out there and serves to be loyal, trusting companions. They don’t thrive in loud conditions and would rather sit next to you than be alone outside. They prefer quality time over alone time, so you shouldn’t adopt one if you spend a large portion of your day away from home.

Brussels Griffon

These dogs are much smaller than the Xolo and are known to be calm and comfortable. Like the Xolo, they enjoy curling up next to their owner any time of the day but are commonly seen as needy because of it. Since they act like lap dogs, they tend to develop small dog syndrome, so you have to regulate how much you hold them.

Bolognese

No, not bologna. This dog breed is much calmer than others, despite still needing daily exercise. Combine that with quietness, and you’ve got a fantastic companion. Remember that the activity isn’t a suggestion; it’s a requirement. Owners who fail to give them regular exercise often report increased behavioral issues, which can be challenging to deal with when you’re an older owner.

Shih Tzu

This little lapdog is sweeter than most and is bound to attach to you instantly. This attachment is usually geared towards one person, so it might be better for a senior companion than a family dog. They don’t need as much exercise as the Bolognese but do still require a lot of affection; they can’t be left alone for this reason.

Lhasa Apso

This breed was specially chosen to warm the laps of Tibetan monks and will no doubt do the same for you. Though they love spending time on your lap, they aren’t lapdogs. Well, they’re not lapdog size. This breed typically grows to about 15 pounds and is protective enough to be a watchdog. While they won’t be attached at your hip, they won’t enjoy being alone all day.

No matter which breed you choose, you’ll get a companion. That’s the most important part. Consider our obedience training so that they can live long and happy lives.
