Types of Japanese Dog Breeds

Japanese dogs have unique behavioral traits than other dog breeds. There are six main breeds that are descendants of authentic Japanese breeds. Read below to learn more about them! 

Akita Inu 

The Akita Inu is the largest of the Japanese breeds as they are 24-28 inches tall and can weigh between 70-130 pounds. Additionally, they are known to be loyal and courageous but also independent. However, human companionship is important to the breed as well as early socialization. 

Hokkaido Ken

The Hokkaido Ken is on average 18-20 inches tall and 44-66 pounds. They are always alert and ready to play because they have a lot of endurance and love to learn! This breed, like many other Japanese breeds, has a short, double coat that sheds seasonally. Also, socialization is important at a young age for the breed to get along with other dogs and strangers. 

Kai Ken

The Kai Ken is usually 17-19 inches tall and weighs 25-40 pounds. This breed is very smart and are more dependent than other Japanese breeds. Additionally, they are very athletic and have strong hunting instincts. So, they need lots of exercise and mental stimulation. 

Kishu Ken

The Kishu Ken is on average 19-22 inches tall and 30-60 pounds. This breed is also very friendly and a great companion to the family. Additionally, this breed has a double coat that needs regular grooming. This dog is eager to please so they are fairly easy to train too. 

Shiba Inu

The Shiba is one of the smaller Japanese breeds that can be 15-16 inches tall and weigh 17-23 pounds. The breed is very affectionate and loves to follow you around the house. Additionally, the Shiba Inu makes a great watchdog. 

Shikoku Ken

The Shikoku Ken is medium-sized that used to be a hunting dog and is usually 17-22 inches tall and can weigh 35-55 pounds. The breed is very energetic and has a lot of endurance as well. Additionally, this breed also has a double coat that sheds throughout the year. So, the Shikoku Ken should be groomed regularly. 

The Japanese breeds all share similar characteristics physically and emotionally. All of them make great companions! And, their heritage makes them that much cooler!
