Dog Zoomies: Explained

Dog Zoomies: Explained

As pet parents, we’re all aware of zoomies. You’re relaxing with your pup, and suddenly, they have a burst of energy! While zoomies are fun to watch, they can still have dog owners scratching their heads. Today, we will break down the zoomies phenomenon and explain precisely why your pup gets the zoomies!

What are zoomies?

All dog breeds experience zoomies, no matter the breed or size. Dogs can also experience zoomies at any age! While most dog owners call these bursts of energy “zoomies” they have a technical term: frenetic random activity periods. Zoomies are unexpected bursts of speed and energy in your pooch. Your furry friend might run in circles, chase their tail, or jump on the couch. Zoomies are also short, only lasting 1-2 minutes. While these dog zoomies seem useless, many canine experts say they serve a purpose!

Why do dogs get zoomies?

Zoomies serve a wide variety of purposes for your furry friends. Canine experts hypothesize dogs use zoomies to realize extra energy or express positive emotions.  Here are some common reasons your pooch gets the zoomies.

Release Anxiety

Our dogs often release their nervous energy through movement. Dogs commonly get the zoomies after a stressful event, such as bathtime or a visit to the vet.

Show Excitement

Our pups will often use zoomies to express their emotions. When our pups are excited or happy, they will show that through their zoomies. Your pooch might get the zoomies after reuniting with a special person or animal.

Exercise

Many dogs will engage in hyperactive behavior, like frequent zoomies, if they are not receiving enough exercise. While zoomies are a normal behavior in dogs, you should be mindful that these zoomies are constant and destructive.

All dogs experience zoomies throughout their life, regardless of age or breed. Zoomies are a natural phenomenon that affects every dog and serve various purposes.
