Flying with Your Dog: A Full Guide

Flying can be unpredictable for dogs, especially if it’s their first time. Here’s a full guide on how to fly with your furry friend!

Preperation.

Crate training.

Before the flight, make sure to crate-train your dog. This means allowing Fido to become comfortable with being in his crate for a long period of time. Encourage your pup to enter their crate by placing their favorite toys and treats inside it. Another important step for pre-flying is taking your dog to the vet. This vet visit checks to see if your pooch is healthy enough to travel.

Vet and airline guidelines.

This visit also to obtain vaccination and health certificate. Many airlines require a health certificate for your pooch, especially if you fly internationally. Make sure to check your airline’s specific guidelines for booking flights with and traveling with pets. There could be varying restrictions on height, weight, and type of carrier allowed on the flight.

Packing.
Make sure to pack a travel bag just for Fido. You can bring his favorite toys, treats, and snacks. You can also bring food and water for the flight, as well as poop bags. It’s a good idea to invest in a dog travel bag. These bags are created with pet parents in mind and can be a life-saver while traveling.

Security

Keep your dog calm while going through TSA. This is one of the most stressful parts of the flying process for both pets and humans. You will have to remove your pooch from its crate, and either carry 0r walk them through the screening process.  Once the screening process is over, take your pooch to the pet relief station and allow them to explore before the flight.

While on the plane

While on the flight, stay calm with your pooch. Our dogs are very intuitive creatures and will pick up on your distress. If your dog is a particularly anxious flyer, invest in calming treats, such as a calming chew. These treats have special ingredients, such as melatonin, that keep your pup nice and calm for a dog flight.
