Why is My Dog Being Destructive?

Many dog owners are familiar with catching your dog being naughty; going through the trash, eating a toy, or tearing up laundry are all destructive habits. This kind of behavior is typically learned over the years as dogs become more comfortable with their family. Although this behavior might have emerged, your dog most likely does not know what they are doing is wrong. When dogs are displaying destructive behavior it might mean that they are trying to communicate with their owners.

Separation Anxiety

A possible answer to what is your dog trying to communicate is that they are experiencing separation anxiety. As people head back into the office, many pets are experiencing separation anxiety. If your dog is showing discomfort as you are head out the door, this might be the case. If it seems that your dog has separation anxiety, you can try interactive toys that can keep your dog entertained while you are away. You should also try downplaying the fact that you are leaving as they will learn that it is not that big of a deal.

Other Reasons

If it does not seem to be separation anxiety, it could be something else. If your dog is young, it could be teething and wanting to chew on everything. If this is the case, try getting them a few chew toys and enforce consequences when they chew on things they are not supposed to. Your dog has the potential to ruin its teeth so consider keeping an eye on your dog’s mouth.
