Tips for Drying Off Your Dog

Tips for Drying Off Your Dog

When drying off your dog, most people just throw a towel on their pup and pat them down. However, the best method is to blow dry your dog.

There are a few reasons blow drying is best:

  • Better Appearance: Hair will be fluffy, straight, and clean. Your pup will look full of body.
  • Cleaner: Your dog’s hair will be cleaner after a blow-dry because a wet coat will pick up all kinds of dirt, especially if they’re allowed to run and play while still wet.
  • Less Stinky: Most coat’s that don’t dry right away harbor a musty and moldy smell that defeats the purpose of bathing

How To Blow Dry a Dog

1. Towel Dry

Towel drying first gets most of the moisture off and lessen the time it takes to blow-dry. Make sure not to vigorously rub with the towel. Squeegee the dog by pressing and squeezing all over to avoid mats and tangles, and to soak up as much water as possible.

2. Choose the Right Dryer Setting

Use a warm setting on the highest flow your dryer allows. The higher the flow, the faster they dry. This is especially noteworthy with thick coat dogs.

3. Use Cool Air Intermittently

To avoid overheating your dog, use cool air intermittently. If your pup starts to shiver then make the air warmer, this will make blow drying be seen as a good thing and not a bad thing.

4. Brush the Coat With Your Free Hand

When blow drying, use your free hand to brush the coat as you go. This will help speed up the process.

5. Check for Mats and Other Issues

While you are brushing and drying, keep your eyes open for mats and skin problems to address later.

Types of Professional Dryers

Cage Dryer

These are obviously used to dry pets in a cage. Pets need to be checked every few minutes when cage drying because they can overheat in a cage.

Fluff/Stand Dryer

These dryers are similar in strength and flow to the ones you have at your home. These dryers are on a stand and may even have a hose attached to have control over where the air is directed. Without the hose attachment, you can point the dryer at your dog and have both hands free to brush at the same time. They are great for finishing your pets face or other areas that are still damp.

Force Dryer

These dryer are made to force the water off the hair. They blast the water up and off the coat, making it look as if dust is flying out of the dryer. These dryers are also nice because they will also blast hair out of the coat making brushing easier.

With these tips and tools, you should be able to quickly and effectively dry your pet. Soon enough your pet will look like a professional did their hair every time.
