Dog Breeds That Are Closely Related to Wolves

It is known that dogs evolved from wolves and became domesticated around 15,000 years ago. Dogs are a separate breed from wolves but share similar genetics. This is more physically obvious in some breeds. Read below to learn about breeds that are genetically closest to wolves.

Siberian Husky

Siberian Huskies are clearly physically similar to wolves. This breed traces back to ancient Siberian Wolves. Additionally, these Huskies originate from Siberia where they were working sled dogs. Today, they make fantastic companion dogs.

Akita

Akitas are most closely genetically related to ancient wolves. They are a Japanese dog breed that is great hunters, and are often police dogs, but are also excellent family dogs.

Chow Chow

Though less wolf-like looking, the Chow Chow is one of the first domesticated breeds. And, it is very closely genetically related to gray wolves. This breed is very loyal to its owners and makes great guard dogs.

Shiba Inu

This fox-like breed was trained to be a hunting dog that originates from the Japanese mountains. Though they are fox-like they show the most wolf-likeness in dogs. Because they were hunters, they are highly energetic dogs.

Afghan Hound

This long-haired beauty originates from the Afghanistan mountains. Though they do not exactly look like wolves, their genetic makeup is surprisingly similar. Additionally, they are characterized by their long shiny coat, slender face, and tall body.

Shih Tzu

This little ball of fur couldn’t look less like a wolf. However, genetically they are very similar. Historically the breed was favored as pets by Chinese emperors. Additionally, they are more of lap dogs than the other dogs mentioned above. However, they still have a big personality and can be quite vocal!
