The Most Common Health Problems Found in Dogs

Just like us, our companions can develop common health problems. Read below to learn what those problems are and what you can do to help your furry friend.

Parasites

Parasites are everywhere and include external and internal bugs. External parasites include fleas and ticks. Whereas internal parasites include heartworms or intestinal worms. But, there are ways to protect your companion. Keep up with your pal’s parasite-preventative treatments to keep them happy and healthy.

Ear Infections

Ear infections can be itchy and painful to your pal and if left untreated can cause more serious damage to your pup’s ears. Your pal shaking his head, scratching his ears, or discharge, debris, or odor from the ears are all signs of an ear infection. So, you should visit your vet if you notice any of these symptoms for more than a day or two. Ear infections may be related to skin issues or allergies as well. So it is always best to get any abnormalities checked out by a professional.

Skin Issues

Itching, scratching, red, inflamed, flaky, scaly, hair loss or other abnormalities can indicate a skin issue. These issues can develop as a result of allergies, parasites, infections, and more. If you do notice any irritation or abnormalities, visit your vet.

Dental Disease

Periodontal disease affects the gums and teeth. This can become serious and is often overlooked. Plaque and tartar can harbor bacteria that can damage the gums and teeth as well as posing the risk of entering the bloodstream. This can lead to damage of the heart and kidneys if the bacteria does enter your companion’s blood. So, if your pal has bad breath or other signs contact your vet and keep up on dental disease prevention.

Obesity

Obesity can lead to diabetes, heart problems, and orthopedic issues. While common, this health problem is the most preventable. A balanced diet and adequate exercise can prevent, and usually reverse, obesity.

Arthritis

Arthritis is joint inflammation and most commonly affects senior dogs but can also result from old injuries or genetics. But, you can help your pal manage arthritis symptoms.

Don’t be alarmed if your pal develops any of these issues. They are very common in dogs and can be mitigated with help from your vet. Now that you know common health conditions in dogs, you can be more vigilant on what to look for and how to help your furry friend.
