Keeping a Dog Safe in the Desert

Desert regions are infamous for their hot temperatures for the majority of the year. Being a pet parent in these regions requires specific precautions to ensure the health and safety of our fur babies.

Indoor or Outdoor Home?

Deciding where your pal will live will determine additional responsibilities. It is best for your dog to be an indoor dog. This is so they can enjoy the air conditioning whether you are home or not. However, if you need to keep your furry friend outside, it is essential that they always have access to shade and cold water. The shade can be provided by a covered deck or patio, a dog house, or any other well-shaded area that is present all day.  You may also consider a cooling mat for your companion. Regardless of location, all dogs should have access to clean and cool water. This will ensure that your pal is cool and prevent dehydration.

Exercise

Exercise is important for your pal. However, you should try to take your walks when it is cooler, such as in the morning or evening. Additionally, this will help ensure that the surfaces you walk on are not too hot. With that being said, avoid hot pavement as it could cause paw pad burns. Keep exercise light if it is hot and pay attention to your pal and how they are tolerating the heat.

Keeping Cool

Swimming is also a fantastic way to keep your pal cool. Some dogs prefer small doggy pools. Or, if you have a pool, your pal can take a dip there too! However, never let your dog in the pool without supervision. Additionally, you can take your pal to public pools, lakes, or rivers. however, be sure to follow all rules and regulations regarding animals and their attendance. Just ensure that wherever your pal swims, it is safe for them!

Heat Exhaustion

Because your pal can’t sweat to cool down like you, they are susceptible to heat exhaustion if they become overheated. Look for signs of heavy breathing, disorientation, fatigue, collapse, or muscle tremors. Additionally, don’t let your pal stay in the sun for too long. Also, be sure that they have access to a cool, shady area and cool, clean water. Stay attentive and ensure that it is not too hot for your companion.

You can easily manage time with your dog in the desert. Just ensure that you are aware of your pal’s surroundings and needs to keep them happy, safe, and healthy!
