DOG TRAINING FIRST STEPS-PART 1
DOG TRAINING FIRST STEPS-PART 1
There are certain number of basic things a civilized dog should do when you tell him to, to make your life and his easier. They are: walking at your side in the streets, called “heeling” in the jargon of dog training, sitting, and laying down on command, staying where you tell him to, coming when you call him, and standing and holding his position at your command.
The fact that these “exercises” are exactly those included in the requirements for the Companion Dog degree awarded in obedience competition by the AKC (American Kennel Club) is by no means a coincidence. We feel that they are the minimum requirements of a civilized dog-sufficient to make him easy to live and a pleasure to own, a true companion.
While we recommend that you train your dog to do properly whatever he is doing, there is of course no necessity for the perfection in home training that is striven for in the competition ring.
There is, however, one absolute requirement identical in ring and home-your dog must learn to obey you instantly, with one and only one command or order. The true sign of the poorly trained dog is the repeated command or commands, quite generally given in rising voice, and only reluctantly complied with by the dog.
