Your dog will experiment with different methods of attracting your attention to them (once he has learned you are the fount and source of most of his natural dog requirements in this world) until he finds one or several which work. Dogs are basically pragmatists. Having little or no moral sense, they use the natural dog methods which result in the maximum results combined with the minimum discomfort to them.
