Advice for First Time Dog Owners

Being a first-time pup parent is rewarding but can be overwhelming too. Read below to learn how to make this transition easier for everyone involved.

Responsibilities

Being a pet parent is a full-time responsibility. You must plan on taking care of your furry friend for the entirety of their life which could be 10 to 15 years. Ensure that you have the time and resources to take care of your companion. This includes feeding, training, playing, grooming, and the overall well-being of your new fur baby.

Making The Right Choice

Do some research to ensure that you are choosing a dog and breed that is right for you, your family, and your lifestyle. Additionally, you may want to look into breeds that are recommended for first-time owners. You should ensure that the personality and characteristics of the breed match your own lifestyle and budget. For example, do you want a laidback pup to lounge around with? Or do you want a jogging buddy to accompany you?

Additionally, consider if a puppy or an adult dog is right for you. Puppies are adorable but require a lot more work. They need lots of socialization and training to ensure that they will be well-behaved adult dogs. Also, puppies have a much higher energy level. However, adult dogs are often easier. They are often house-trained and know some basic commands too. They are just as sweet, fun, and loving so this may be a better option as a first-time pet parent.

Coming Home

During the first few days you have your new furry friend, you should take them to the vet for a wellness exam. Additionally, let your companion explore at their own pace and allow rest time too. Don’t force interactions to allow time for your new pal to feel at home and comfortable. With that being said, don’t have more than two people over at a time to meet your new friend. This will keep them from being overwhelmed.

You should also be sure to start and stick to a routine to help your pal adjust. Meals, walks, training, and other activities should be around the same time daily. You should also clearly but gently communicate the rules to your pal and reward them with praise and treats for doing the right thing.

Adjusting to a new friend in the house can be a slow process for everyone. However, don’t let that discourage you! Stick to a routine, show them love and attention and you will be best friends in no time!
