How to Treat a Paw Pad Burn
Fido can burn their feet on the hot pavement. So, you should be vigilant and know when it is too hot for your pup. Not only could they burn their feet but they are also at risk for dehydration and heat stroke if it is too hot! But don’t fret! Below is a guide on how to treat your pal’s burnt paw pads if they do happen to get burned.
To detect a paw pad burn, you may see your companion limping, refusing to walk, and blisters or redness on the paw. Once you identify a burnt paw pad you should:
1. Clean The Paw
The first step is to clean your pal’s injured paw. Use antibacterial soap and remove any dirt and debris that may be in the wound.
2. Check For Bleeding
To do this, gently apply pressure to the burnt paw pad. If there is bleeding, keep pressure until the bleeding stops. Then wash the pads again. You can easily treat small cuts at home but any larger or deeper cuts should be inspected by your vet.
3. Soak The Paw
Next, soak your pup’s paws in cold water for roughly ten minutes. This will provide a cooling relief to ease the pain of the burn. If your furry friend doesn’t like the soak, apply a cold compress instead.
4. Use Antiseptic and a Bandage
Applying antiseptic spray or ointment to the burnt area will prevent infection. Then, to prevent the antiseptic from rubbing off, roll a bandage around your companion’s paw. The bandage will help the antiseptic to soak into the skin and be effective. Try using a “figure 8” pattern to secure the bandage.
5. Visit The Vet
You should always take your four-legged friend to the vet if your pal’s paw pads get burnt. This is so you can ensure that the injury is not serious. Additionally, your vet may recommend a better ointment or pain relief treatment.
