Tips for Traveling with Your Dog

Taking your dog along with you on trips is exciting and also allows you the peace of mind in not having to worry about them back at home. But traveling with your furry friend isn’t always a walk in the park, it’s easy for something to go wrong and upset your trip if you don’t do proper research ahead of time. To help your journey run smoothly we’ve compiled a list of what we think to be the most important things to remember when traveling with your dog.

Driving with Fido

To ensure the safety of your dog its best to make sure they are restrained while in a vehicle, whether it be a crate or a seatbelt/harness.  This prevents them from being a distraction to the driver and potentially harming themselves or someone else in an accident. Also, make sure to take intermediate brakes to allow Fido to use the restroom and stretch their legs out a bit. Most importantly, don’t ever leave your dog in the car. They will easily get dehydrated and overheated especially in warmer weather.

Taking your Dog on a Flight

First, check the flight rules to make sure you have everything you need to take your dog on the flight, you don’t want any surprises when you get to the airport that could delay your travels. Most dogs must be in a crate to board the plan, and it would make your life and everyone else’s a lot easier if you did this before you entered a frantic airport. Don’t make your pups time more stressful by having a dramatic and emotional goodbye either, if you remain calm they will most likely mimic your emotions and stay calm as well.

What to Do in a Hotel

When booking a hotel always double check that it is pet-friendly to avoid any issues at check-in. When entering the hotel make sure your dog is by your side and not wandering about. It’s also important to try to put your scent all around the room before your dog starts to get settled. Once you’ve checked in, take your pup out on a walk to get them familiar with their new environment so they feel more comfortable.

Letting Your Canine Explore the New Environment

In a new place, your dog is sure to want to explore all the new scents, sounds, and sights. Allowing them to do this will make them feel safer. Always make sure to keep an eye on them, because with a new place comes items that could harm them that you’re not aware of.

What if You Can’t Bring your Dog?

If you’re going on a trip that doesn’t allow you to take your furry friend, don’t fear, we offer a board & train program where you can leave your pup in our care. While you’re gone Fido will not only be well taken care of but also learning new skills that will help them become a happier and healthier dog.

Traveling with your four-legged friend can become a disaster quickly if you don’t properly plan ahead. Knowing what to expect when traveling with your dog will help you know what to do if certain issues arise, and prevent a lot of them from happening in the first place.
