Protect Your Dog’s Paws from Snow, Ice, Salt

Winter months can be tough for both humans and our pups. Whether we’re dealing with cold temperatures, harsh wind, or other hardships of the winter, it can take a toll on our bodies. One part of our pups bodies that can especially be affected is their paws. When you’re out on your walks or getting in your furry friend’s daily dose of play and exercise, their paws can be affected from the elements on the ground. Snow, ice, salt, antifreeze, debris, and more can damage your pup’s paws and certain aspects can be dangerous to them. It is key to protect their paw pads so your dog doesn’t have to deal with injury. Luckily there are plenty of ways you can help your dog out this chilly season. Here are some tips on how to keep your pup’s paws in tip-top shape.

Buy Some Booties

While it may seem silly to get your dog shoes, it can be very helpful in protecting your dog’s paws. It keeps them 100% covered from the elements so they can walk freely around in the snow or ice. Many breeds are not built to handle the cold temps or the winter weather, so it is important to provide them additional protection if you live in a cold, snowy place. Booties are a great option since they not only protect the paw pads, but also provide warmth to the overall paw. They may take a little getting used to for your dog, but if you live in a snowy area and need to take your dog for their walks, they are great item to invest in. Eventually your dog will adjust. When picking out your boots, make sure you measure your dog’s paws to get the right fit.

Pick Up Paw Balm

If booties are not a good option for your dog, get a paw balm instead. Before your head out on a walk or to play, take the balm and rub it on the bottom of their paw pads. The balm creates somewhat of a layer of protection against the snow and ice, which minimizes the chance of the skin becoming dry or salt causing damaging and abrasions. These balms can also be used after walks to moisturize, keep the paws softer, and smooth any cracks. You can find these balms online or in a pet store, but there are also recipes to make your own if you prefer.

Wipe Down the Paws

Another way to keep your dog paws clean and less dry is to always wipe down their paws after walks or exercise. If your dog comes in and has snow or ice on their paws, build up of these elements can cause drying and damage. Take a towel and warm water to wipe off any of this debris. This is also key for any chemicals or antifreeze that they may have picked up on their paws while walking. If you don’t wipe their paws, they may lick their paws which can result in ingesting dangerous or deadly chemicals.

Avoid The Cold

Of course, the most efficient way to keep your dog’s paws safe is to avoid the snow and ice to begin with. Of course, you need to take your dog for their walks to get exercise. But try to keep these walks shorter if possible. Being outside for too long when it is extremely cold can be dangerous for you and your dog. Instead, try to find some innovative ways to get exercise inside.

With these tips, your pups paws should stay safe and in good condition this winter!
