Tips to Prevent Your Dog From Escaping Your Yard

In order to keep our pups safe in our yard, there are a few steps you need to take. We have created a guide to prevent your dog from escaping your backyard.

  • Remove all climbable objects in your yard. If there is a chair or a table next to the fence, it’s best to remove those to ensure your dog won’t find a way over the fence.
  • Have your dog spayed or neutered. Intact dogs are known to roam around in search of a mate.
  • It is recommended to install a coyote roller, which is a metal bar that goes around the top of the fence and prevents the dog from pulling themselves over.
  • Consider a wooden fence that is tall enough and does not allow for easy climbing. Chain link fences are easy for dogs to climb up and escape.
  • Regularly maintain your fence. Check for digging along the fence line.

Extra time outside with your dog can also decrease his urge of wanting to break free from the yard. Playtime that involves games, training, or just having fun can keep their mind focused as well as keeping them from having a desire to explore further. Remember, a mentally and physically stimulated dog is less likely to act out.

If you have any tips or tricks on how you keep your dog from escaping your backyard, we would love to hear from you!
