Tips for Having a Safe Christmas with Fido

Christmas is a holiday that brings friends and family together. However, there are some dangers that come with it. So, read below to learn how to keep your pal healthy and safe this holiday!

Trees and Lights

Though Christmas decorations are pretty and festive, they can be dangerous if you are not careful. You should be sure to hang all of your ornaments a few inches above the height of your pet. this will prevent your pal from chewing on any ornaments. This way, your ornaments won’t need to be replaced and you will avoid a trip to the vet.

Additionally, be sure that your pal doesn’t get tangled in any string lights or chews on the wires. This is especially important as you set up your decorations and Fido becomes interested in what you are doing. Also, you should turn off wired lights when you are not in the room.

Food Safety

While it is hard to resist the adorable puppy-dog eyes, never share your food with your companion. Fatty, sugary, or seasoned foods can be toxic for your pal and hard for them to digest. So, you should never give your pal bones, onions, raisins, grapes, or seasoned meats and veggies. Additionally, sugar and artificial sweeteners can be harmful. So, don’t give your four-legged friends any chocolate or deserts.

Additionally, ensure that all your leftovers are either put away or thrown away. You should also make sure that the trashcan is secured away or take it out frequently so your pal doesn’t find a dangerous snack. Also, keep your pal out of the kitchen and dining room while you are cooking and eating. This will minimize the risk of them eating dropped food or bugging you for a snack they can’t have.

Guests

Some dogs love guests and extra attention. However, others may be anxious around crowds or strangers. So, you should know how your pal will react with more people, activity, and noise in the house. If your furry friend gets anxious, set up a quiet area in a separate room with their favorite blankets and toys to help minimize their stress.

Additionally, you should keep your guest’s belongings in an area away from your pal so they don’t get into anything that they shouldn’t. You should also be sure to watch exits as people enter and leave your home to ensure your pal doesn’t get out. In case they do, be sure that ID tags and microchip information is up-to-date.

Travel

If you plan to travel for the holiday instead of having guests over, take some travel precautions. If you are traveling together, pack all the necessary food, supplies, and medications. Additionally, make sure your pal is safely secured in the car (or plane, or train) and never roams the vehicle, rides in the front seat, or on your lap. If you are crossing state or international boarders, you will need a health certificate from your vet.

Follow the tips above to ensure a safe and healthy Christmas with your friends, family, and Fido!
