Can I Use Apple AirTags for Dogs?

Yes, but no.

The Apple AirTag is a great way to keep track of easily lost things, like your keys or your phone. Because it connects your phone and has a variety of modes depending on what you need, it might even seem like a great way to keep track of your dog. Many users see it as a more affordable and convenient option vs regular GPS trackers, but Apple actually recommends you don’t use it on your dog.

Why?

Apple’s reasoning is actually pretty fair. For starters, the AirTag needs to be connected to a phone with working service. This means that if you lose your dog in the forest or somewhere where connection will be spottier than normal, the AirTag isn’t going to do you any good. Furthermore, the Bluetooth feature is fully dependent on you being within 100ft of your dog. So, if your dog gets really lost, then you might not be able to find them. Apple also warns that the keyring attached to the tag isn’t designed for dogs. This means that it can easily be torn off by anything that might catch onto it.

What does this mean for me?

Whether or not you use the AirTag on your dog is up to you, but keep in mind that there are plenty of other options out there that might be a little more useful and/or less risky. GPS Collars do the same thing as an AirTag, and some have even more perks (like health tracking). If you’re a little harder on money, then you can always microchip your dog and combine it with an updated collar tag.
