Helping Your Dog Adjust After a Move

Moving can be scary for humans and dogs alike. It takes time to get used to change, which affects everyone differently. If you and your pet have just moved, there are some things to consider as you help them adjust to their new home.

Keep A Routine

Dogs are creatures of habit. Keeping the schedule despite the move is the first step to making sure your dog is well-adjusted. If your dog is used to going for a walk after returning from work, make sure you take them out once you get home. On a smaller scale, try to keep their meal and treat schedule the same. This will make it feel like the only thing that really changed was your interior design.

Introduce Them to the Neighborhood

Lots of things get lost during a move, like toys and socks. More importantly, when you move, you leave behind a lot of friends and memories. Walk your dog around the neighborhood to introduce them to as many new neighbors as possible. Of course, approach each person with consent and help your dog make some new friends.

Comfort Them with Quality Time

If your dog is prone to separation anxiety, it might worsen after the move. Make sure that you spend as much quality time as you can with them. This will calm their nerves and assure them that not everything has changed, especially your love for them. Not only that but spending time with them can help them feel safe.

Be Patient

Every dog adjusts at its own pace. Be patient as they take their time. Try not to yell at them or treat them any harsher than you did before. Doing so will reassure them that the move isn’t an act of punishment. Be there for them.
