A Guide for Basset Hound Owners

If you are considering adding a Basset Hound to your family, read below so you can properly understand your new friend and care for them!

Traits

Basset Hounds are recognized by their long ears, loose skin, and short legs. On average they are 11-15 inches tall, weigh 40-60 pounds, and live 12-13 years. Additionally, they are commonly brown, white, and black with random spotting patterns.

Temperament

This breed is very mellow in temperament. They are a very friendly and calm breed. So, they are great with children, strangers, and other dogs. But, they don’t make the best watchdogs. Additionally, they have a fairly low energy level. However, they still need regular exercise to stay happy and healthy! But, this also means that they can be difficult to train because they can be slow and stubborn. Also, they are moderately vocal when it comes to barking. Because they are hunting dogs, they tend to bark and howl. Basset Hounds also love to sing!

Health

Basset hounds are prone to ear infections. And, if they are left untreated can cause permanent damage to their ears.  Additionally, it is common for basset hounds to develop wax buildup in the ears. This can cause discomfort and eventually lead to an ear infection. So, you should keep up with regular ear cleaning to prevent these issues.

Grooming

The breed’s short hair does not need frequent trims. However, they are moderate shedders. So, they require brushing at least once a week. This keeps your pal’s healthy oils spread over their fur to keep the coat smooth and healthy! Occasional baths are also recommended whenever they get a bit stinky.

If you are looking for a running buddy, or a pup to be super active with you, you should consider a different breed. However, if you are looking for a calm and easygoing companion, a basset hound is for you!
