Preparing Fido for NYE Fireworks

Preparing Fido for NYE Fireworks

New Year’s Eve can be hard for our pups, especially if they fear fireworks. Follow these tips on how to prepare your pup for fireworks this new year.

Create A Safe Space

Create a cozy place your dog can use during New Year’s Eve Celebrations. While it’s very hard to completely soundproof a room for your dog, you can take steps to dampen loud noises. Use blankets or thick foam around your dog’s crate to muffle loud sounds. Place calming objects in your dog’s safe space, such as a blanket or favorite toy. Make sure to show your pooch this safe space before New Year’s Eve so they’re familiar with this area.

Practice Going Out

Sometimes, you can’t avoid taking your furry friend out during fireworks. So, it’s best to make a safety plan before taking your pooch out on New Year’s Eve. Make sure your pup’s leash, collar/or harness are all sturdy and safe. If you have a fenced yard, make sure the fence is secure and has no escape points. Dogs that are usually docile can become erratic and run away when scared.

Look Into Medications

If your dog’s anxiety surrounding loud noises makes them a danger to themselves or others, look into calming medications. Your vet might prescribe dog-safe anxiety medications. Always consult your veterinarian before giving your furry friend any medication. Overuse of anxiety or sleep medications can lead to long-term health issues in your pooch.

Comfort Fido

The best thing you can do for your dog when they are scared is give them comfort. If all your dog wants to do is cuddle while the fireworks are going off, give them all the cuddles they want. If a special toy or blanket calms your pooch down, have them readily available. Remember that your pup is a member of the family and should be treated as such.

While New Year’s Eve can be a tough time for our four-legged friends, these tips can make this New Year a little easier on you and your pup.
