Does My Dog Need Sunscreen?

While we know sunburns and skin diseases can affect humans, did you know dogs can be sunburned too? Dogs need sunscreen and other sun protection during the summer! Read on the learn about how to protect your dog from the sun this summer!

Dog sunburns are similar to human sunburns. The skin appears pink, tender, and itchy. It can also look scaley and blister. Certain breeds have a higher chance of getting sunburnt than others. Breeds with thinner and lighter hair are more likely to be burnt. This is because fur doesn’t give them adequate sun protection. Sunburns can lead to other skin issues, such as skin cancer. If your dog has been sunburnt, contact your vet and check for signs of skin disease. 

Applying Doggy Sunscreen 

Dogs need sunscreen just like us humans. Apply sunscreen liberally, applying a thick, even coat over Fido. Rub the sunscreen in to make sure it soaks through their fur. Please pay close attention to sensitive areas, like their belly, nose, and inside of their ears. Reapply every two hours that you and your pup are outside. 

Pet Safe Sunscreens and Sun Protection

When shopping for a dog’s sunscreen, ensure it is non-toxic and free of certain ingredients. Ingredients in human sunscreens, like zinc and PABA, can be toxic to dogs. Some brands that pet parents recommend are Petkin and Emmy’s Best Pet Products. Other dog owners also use zinc-free children’s sunscreen on their pooch. You can also invest in other forms of sun protection for your pooch, such as rash guards and sun caps. These are great if your pooch will be lying in the sun all day. You can also purchase shaded dog goggles to protect Fido’s eyes from the sun. The goggles are especially helpful if your pooch has eye issues like pannus.
